What is a Living Support Assistant?

You may have seen some of the Living Support Assistants at the residences - they're the senior students in the blue Living Support hoodies.

Living Support Assistants (or LSAs) are current University of Glasgow students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, who live on-site and work alongside the Warden and Senior Living Support Assistants (SLSAs) to provide out of hours support to residents.

The main purposes of the LSA teams are:

  • To provide advice and support for students living at university accommodation,
  • To keep harmony within the residences, and encourage a responsible attitude in tenants so that all residents on site are able to enjoy peaceful use of their properties,
  • To act as a link between students and more senior members of staff within the residences,
  • To contribute to the organising and running of events within the residences in order to maximise the student experience.

What are the benefits?

  • 100% rent rebate of a standard room for a Senior Living Support Assistant.
  • HEAR accredited, meaning this position appears on your university transcript.
  • A great addition to your CV.
  • Full training provided, including certified Emergency First Aid and Scottish Mental Health First Aid.

What are the hours?

LSAs work on a rota basis, with the frequency of duties varying from 1 night in 3 at our smaller sites, to 1 night in 7 at larger sites. LSAs are permitted to swap like for like shifts between them, making this a great flexible role!

When an LSA is on shift, they typically spend an hour in the site office from 6-7pm, and are then 'on-call' from 7pm until the following morning. Weekend duties vary from site to site.

LSAs are also expected to participate in staff meetings, trainings, and events.

Am I right for the job?

We are looking for people who would made good role models for new students of the university.

If you are:

  • confident
  • out-going
  • a 'people person'
  • able to work as part of a team and independently using your own initiative
  • able to confront other people's poor behaviour in a constructive manner
  • looking to develop your leadership qualities

then you may be just the right person for a Living Support role!

This role would ideally suit students with previous experience of living in university accommodation, or people with previous leadership experience such as school prefects, etc.

To qualify for a Living Support role you must be a University of Glasgow student or staff member for the 2019-2020 academic session. You do not need to meet the requirements for an accommodation application, meaning students who reside in Glasgow city who would normally not be offered a room, as well as students in senior years of their degrees are eligible.
