How to Handle the Heat
It's been a scorching 30 degrees celsius over the past few days in Glasgow, and a lot of us are struggling to handle the heat.
If you're from warmer pastures, you probably have air conditioning at home or at least in your place of work. As Scotland usually has a much more mild climate, very few buildings have air-con. With an average summer temperature of 15 degrees celsius air conditioning is, for most of the year, a pretty useless and unnecessary addition.
If you're boiling, here are some tips to make the heat more bearable!
It's important to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Try to avoid alcohol, caffeine, or very sugary drinks, as these can dehydrate you. Here are the signs of dehydration, and what you can do to avoid it.
Freeze a bottle of water to carry around with you (remember, don't fill it right to the top). It'll be solid when you leave the house, but the heat will start melting it from the moment you take it out of the freezer. Wrap it in a towel to prevent water condensation affecting other items in your bag.
There are also water drinking apps that you can download for free to track your water consumption, and even remind you keep topped up.
Eat for the heat
Try to eat smaller more frequent meals as opposed to big meals, as this is easier for your body to metabolise and will keep your core cooler.
Also try eating foods that will help keep you hydrated, like fruit and vegetables. You could also indulge in a fruity ice lolly.
Take a nippy dip
Swap your usual hot shower or bath for a cold one. We know... for most people the idea of getting into cold water is a nightmare, but in this heat it can actually be quite nice.
You could also freeze or refrigerate water in a spray bottle, and spritz yourself throughout the day to keep cool.
Dress for the weather
Wear loose fitting clothing, and cool fabrics such as cotton or linen when going outside. Wear a hat to protect your head - you can get sunburn on your scalp even if you have hair!
It's also a good idea to wear less accessories that could trap in heat, and tie back long hair to stay cool.
Don't forget suncream
Apply suncream before you go out into the sun, and remember not to miss anywhere. People often forget about their face, feet, back of the neck, and ears! Take your suncream with you so you can top it up throughout the day. It's recommended you reapply every two hours, or more often if you are swimming or sweating a lot.
Find a cool spot
Try to find the coldest room in your house or flat, and keep curtains shut to lower the temperature. Heat rises, so cooler rooms tend to be on the ground floor. If you don't live on the ground floor, try heading to a communal space.
If you're outside, try find a shaded spot like under a tree. It can be up to 15 degrees cooler in the shade!
Head inside between 11am and 3pm
It's typically warmest between 11am and 3pm, so if you struggle in the heat then head indoors during these times.
Try these sleep tricks
Getting to sleep when it's too hot can be difficult. You could try misting your sheets with cool water from a spray bottle, or even put your bed sheets in a bag and pop them in the freezer. You can also make an ice pack that won't melt by putting rice into a sock, tying it up, and freezing it.
